CdS/S Anode System in an Electrochemical Solar Cell

Abstract
Polarization characteristics of the sintered CdS electrode under illumination in S2‐1+x (sulfide or polysulfide) ion‐containing electrolyte are reported. Differential capacity of the CdS/electrolyte interface and performance of the photocell, CdS/electrolyte/Pt, were also measured. S2‐1+x ion in the electrolyte shifts remarkably the flatband potential of CdS electrode toward the cathodic direction and makes this electrode photoelectrochemically stable. The possibility of an efficient electrochemical photocell with CdS electrode using S2‐1+x ion‐containing electrolyte has been demonstrated. S2‐ and SO2‐3 ion in the electrolyte for electrochemical photocell can dissolve the elemental sulfur produced by the photoanodic reaction on CdS electrode to form S2‐1+x and S2O2‐3 ion respectively.
