Leisure, lifestyle and the construction of social position

Abstract

Using Bourdieu's (1984) conceptualization of economic and cultural capital this paper provides an ethnographic analysis of the leisure practices of residents living on a private housing estate in the north-west of England. Their socio-economic location is examined and it is suggested that their leisure practices can be understood as one of the ways in which social position is constructed.
