Photosynthesis under Low-Level SO2and CO2Enhancement Conditions in Three Duckweed Species

Abstract
Following exposure to 0.5 and 0.75 ppm SO2 fumigation for up to 2 wk, apparent photosynthesis was determined in Lemna minor, L. valdiviana and Spirodela oligorhiza by IR gas analysis at 300, 500 and 1000 ppm CO2. Net photosynthesis was inhibited in L. valdiviana and S. oligorhiza but not in L. minor. The growth rate, as measured by frond count, was not affected in L. minor and L. valdiviana and only slightly in S. olgirhiza. Short-term CO2 enhancement appreciably increased the photosynthetic rates.
