Sodium Transport in Cystic-Fibrosis Fibroblasts Not Different from Normal

Abstract
To the Editor: We have reported that cultured fibroblasts from homozygotes and obligate heterozygotes for cystic fibrosis (CF) accumulated less 22Na in the presence of ouabain than did normal cells.* In our original study, 32 different fibroblast strains were examined for the ability to accumulate 22Na. Under our experimental conditions, fibroblasts exhibited two different types of 22Na accumulation. Fibroblasts from eight patients with CF, eight obligate heterozygous parents of patients with CF, and three siblings of patients with CF all exhibited low sodium accumulation; fibroblasts from 13 normal persons exhibited high sodium accumulation. Analysis of the 32 subjects showed that . . .
