No Effect of Folic Acid Supplement on CSF Folate and Serum Vitamin B12 in Patients on Anticonvulsants

Abstract
SUMMARY: In a double blind setting the effects of administration of 15 mg folic acid daily were studied in 61 hospitalized epileptic patients on longterm anticonvulsant medication. At the first control after 3–4 weeks, serum folate activity appeared to be highly supranormal in the 30 patients on folic acid supplement, but even after 3 months the mean cerebrospinal fluid folate level showed no rise. The mean serum vitamin B12 activity was not influenced by folic acid administration.RÉSUMÉ: On a fait une étude “double blind” en donnant 15 mg 'acide folique par jour à 61 épileptiques hospitalitiesés et en traitement anti‐épileptique depuis longtemps. Lors du premier contrôle, après 3–4 semaines, 'activité folique dans le sérum était très audessus de la normale chez les 30 sujets ayant le supplément 'acide folique; par contre même après trois mois, le taux folique moyen dans le liquide céphalo‐rachidien n‘était pas augmenté. 'activité sérique moyenne de la vitamine B12 n’était pas modifyée après 'administration 'acide folique.
