Abstract
The pH of the cerebral cortex was measured with membrane and capillary glass electrodes, and correlated with changes in cortical electrical activity induced by asphyxia, CO2, Metrazol, (6,7,8,9-tetrahydro-5-azepotetrazole and nitrogen mustard. During Metrazol seizures, cortical pH declined from approximately 7.3 to 7.0, and was neither preceded nor followed by an alkaline shift. Acute asphyxia caused a fall of pH from 7.3 to 7.1. Hyperventi-lation produced a rise from 7.3 to 7.45. Inhalation of 30% CO2 to 70% O2 during Metrazol seizure caused a fall of pH to 6.4. Metrazol discharge disappeared at pH 6.9 and reappeared at 6.7 when CO2 inhalation was discontinued. Nitrogen mustard seizure activity did not appear until after the cortex was made acid (pH 6.6) by CO2 inhalation, and the CO2 then discontinued. Keywords
