Palm-Nut Smashing by Cebus a. apella in Colombia

Abstract
Three cases of C. a. apella smashing the palm-nut of Astrocaryum chambira Burret in La Macarena National Park, Colombia are described. It is assumed that the monkeys were attempting to obtain food from these nuts in the form of endosperm, palm-nut "milk," and/or insect larvae. The exploitation of this abundant food resource by C. appella and not by any of the other 7 sympatric primate species [Ateles paniscus, Alouatta seniculus, Saimiri sciureus, Lagothrix lagothricha, Callicebus moloch, C. torquatus, Aotus trivirgatus] may give them a competitive advantage. This circumstance could partially account for the numerical superiority of C. apella at the time of our survey.
