Variational derivation of a first-order charge transfer theory

Abstract
It is shown that a first-order charge transfer theory recently introduced in the literature can be derived from the Schwinger variational principle. The formal properties of the Schwinger principle are also used to establish a hierarchy of higher-order approximations.Keywords
