Abstract
Sensitivity results are presented for an erbium doped fibre amplifier pulse position modulation (EDFA PPM) system operating at 622 Mbit/s and λ = 1.53 µm. These indicate that EDFA PPM offers 7.9 dB sensitivity improvement over EDFA PCM and is beyond the fundamental PCM limit. Original results are presented for the PPM system sensitivity penalty due to slot clock jitter. The penalty varied between 0.15 and 1.9 dB for the range of parameters considered. The selection of the PPM parameters that minimise the penalty is investigated. Keywords
