Abstract
There is a typical zonation with Geo-, Hydro- and Sublittoral on piers and rocks, corresponding chiefly with the littoral zonation of the south Swedish coasts. In the absence of rocks only a sparse algal flora on the sandy shores is developed. In the shallow brackish bays between the islands of Hiddensee and Rtlgen a rich underwater vegetation is to be found, also demonstrating a distinct zonation. By the different types of growth and the distribution of Fucus vesiculosus the strong dependence of the algal vegetation on the environmental factors is demonstrated. The algal flora of Hiddensee is characterized by the geographical position of the island east of the Darsser Schwelle, which is known as the most important algological boundary in the Baltic: up to this boundary marine species penetrate into the Baltic. East of the Darsser Schwelle in the Baltic proper a reduced algal flora is found. On the shores of the island of Hiddensee, located just behind the Darsser Schwelle, a series of more marine species of the western part of the Baltic are growing besides the algae of the inner part of the Baltic. This publication has 0 references indexed in Scilit:
