Abstract
The results of a survey of the attitudes towards geriatrics of clinical medical students (CMS) and junior hospital medical staff (JHMS) show that CMS have a more favourable attitude towards the speciality than JHMS (P<0.001). We believe this is due to a deterioration of attitude after graduation. CMS are patient/treatment orientated whereas JHMS are education/career orientated. On the basis of our findings we suggest that geriatrics should enter the CMS curriculum during the first clinical year and all candidates for the M.R.C.P. and M.R.C.G.P. should have experience in geriatric medicine before sitting the examinations. Furthermore, the motives of those at present committed to other fields, in which there is little immediate career potential, should be investigated to determine how they can be attracted to geriatrics and thereby increase the immediate recruitment to the speciality. Keywords
