Abstract
Two models are considered in this paper with a view to make a theoretical study of the effect of standby redundancy on the time to failure of a system that is used intermittently and the units of which are subject to breakdowns and repairs. The models described in this paper differ only in the definition we make on system's failure. In the first model a system's failure is defined without taking the demand pattern of the system into account, whereas in the second the demand pattern of the system is included in the definition. The Laplace transforms of the probability density functions of system's failure defined under Model I and Model II are derived. The expressions for expected times to failures under these models are also derived. Keywords
