Abstract
This paper describes the optical-fiber submarine cable system being developed by the Kokusal Denshin Denwa Company, Ltd. (KDD) for the transoceanic service in 1988. The system uses 1.3-μm single-mode fibers to carry digital signals operating at 280 Mbits/s. This paper discusses the system parameters, repeater design, cable design, and reliability evaluation. Furthermore, the results of a deep-sea trial at 7000-m sea depth carried out in February 1984 are reported.
