Abstract
THE PREFRONTAL regions of the brain present difficult problems for investigation, which have led to divergent findings and opinions and have caused considerable perplexity to most workers in the field. The behavioral and intellectual changes which may follow lesions in the frontal regions are difficult to isolate and compare. Differences in the severity of the deteriorations, the localization and nature of the lesions, the intellectual assets and the general personality traits of the patients, as well as the variations in the technics employed and the persons employing the technics, have presented unavoidable complications. There is good evidence that unilateral, and even bilateral, removal of the prefrontal region may cause no perceptible defect. The fairly typical clinical syndrome formerly attributed to frontal lobe dysfunction may depend on involvement of other portions of the brain. Studies based on expanding lesions or presenile deteriorations have required reevaluation. Hebb's1 critical evaluation of frontalKeywords
