l-METHYL-2-MERCAPTOIMIDAZOLE: AN ANTITHYROID COMPOUND HIGHLY ACTIVE IN MAN1

Abstract
K had been discovered earlier that the efficiency of an anti-thyroid compound in inhibiting the accumulation of I131 by the normal human thyroid gland correlated well with the effectiveness of the drug in the treatment of thyrotoxicosis. On this basis (in contrast to results using the rat test), propylthiouracil was found to be slightly less potent than thiouracil, while 2-mer-captoimidazole was 10 times as effective as thiouracil. Results of the present study indicate that 1-methyl-2-mercaptoimidazole is 100 times as effective as thiouracil in inhibiting the uptake of radioiodine by the normal human thyroid gland.
