Abstract
Common wheat, Triticum aestivum "Chinese Spring" (2n = 6x = 42), was crossed with Aegilops comosa (2n = 14) which has outstanding resistance to stripe rust (hypersensitivity). A backcrossing program was initiated in which Chinese Spring was the recurrent parent, and this was accompanied by selection for rust reference. In this way 43- and 44- chromosome rust-resistant derivatives were isolated which had the full complement of "Chinese Spring" chromosomes and a single chromosome of A. comosa in either the monosomic or disomic condition. The rust resistance was shown to be determined by the additional A. comosa chromosome. The A. comosa chromosome, determining stripe rust resistance, is homoeologous with the chromosomes of wheat group 2. The Aegilops chromosome should be designated 2M, to indicate its homoeology and genome. This publication has 6 references indexed in Scilit:
