Abstract
In international affairs, as in all other human relationships, clichés are often a troublesome but always a necessary part of communication. An example is the Juggernaut metaphor. Originating in intercultural misunderstanding, it was widely used by Americans in the early nineteenth century and revealed much about their attitudes toward the Orient.Keywords
