Wavelength Characterisation of Ferroelectric Liquid Crystal Cells

Abstract
Measurements are presented for the optical dielectric constants of a ferro-electric liquid crystal (MIX 783) over the visible part of the spectrum using the excitation of leaky guided Fabry-Perot optical modes. Incident monochromatic polarised light is coupled into resonant guided modes of the liquid crystal system which are then observed as sharp dips in the reflected signal at specific incident angles. It is possible to fit all the experimental data across the visible region of the spectrum with a uniaxial optic dielectric tensor and a model of the alignment which has bent chevron layers. Using this technique precise values were obtained for the refractive indices of the liquid crystal mixture MIX 783.
