Abstract
In 1992, at an International Cancer Nursing Conference, Barbara Warren (1) told a story entitled, 'There’s no such thing as a dragon’. It went as follows. Billy awoke one morning to find a dragon on his bed. He ran downstairs to tell his mother. But she said: ‘There’s no such thing as a dragon,’ so when Billy went back to his room he ignored the beast. The dragon grew bigger and bigger until it took over the house. It became hungry and chased a bread van, taking the house with it. When Billy’s father came home he could not find his house or family. Billy’s mother was still unwilling to acknowledge the creature but when he patted it on the head, it shrank to the size of a kitten. Billy’s mother said: T don’t mind dragons this size, why did it have to grow so big?’ Billy replied: ‘I think it just wanted to be noticed.’Keywords
