Sequential Events in Induction of Sarcomas by 4-Hydroxyaminoquinoline 1-0xide: Fibroplasia, a Premalignant Phase2

Abstract
Single, intraperitoneal injection of the aromatic amide 4-hydroxyaminoquinoline I-oxide resulted in a high incidence of sarcomas of the abdominal cavity. In each tumor-bearing animal, a severe abdominal fibrogenesis preceded the appearance of tumors. Rats without tumors had much less fibrosis. This relationship suggested that proliferation of fibrous elements under the influence of this chemical carcinogen was required for malignant transformation, perhaps from altered multipotential mesenchymal cells.
