Abstract
Mesothemic cycles, which are unconformity-bounded on shelf areas but defined by marker points at the bases of chronozones in continuous sections in basinal areas, are delineated in the Namurian (Carboniferous) of South Wales and northern France. The patterns of successive transgressions in these areas show many similarities to those in northern England. The suggested explanatory hypothesis of eustatic rises and falls of sea level in the Namurian is strengthened. There is evidence that the same mesothemic cycles are also present in western Germany. Keywords
