Abstract
Sucking habits were registered in 9-year-old children from two communities in Sweden and compared with results obtained from a similar study conducted 14 years ago. The number of children who did not develop an initial dummy-or thumb-sucking habit has diminished from 32% to 10%. The main reason for this is a marked increase in the number of dummy-suckers which to some extent is balanced by a decrease in the number of finger-suckers. The number of children with a finger-sucking habit at 9 years of age had been reduced from 14% to 6%. No children were dummy-suckers as 9-year-olds
