Abstract
It is quite common for students studying fluids to be misled into accepting as fact a phenomenon which just does not occur experimentally. It is usual to introduce a water can with three holes in it, producing streams of water as indicated in Fig. 1. It is asserted that the increase of pressure with depth causes the horizontal distance traversed by the lowest stream to be larger than that traversed by the other two streams. However, if the situation is reproduced, (Fig. 2) it is found that the middle stream travels the greatest distance. This phenomenon is not at all in accord with most student’s intuitions, and when observed for the first time, generates a lively discussion.
