Abstract
This monograph summarizes in a very tight and efficient way much of the available information on the clinical characteristics, basic mechanisms, diagnosis, and treatment of the shock state. The opening chapter introduces the subject in a brief and general way. The next section deals with the indices (for some inexplicable reason repeatedly and persistently spelled indicies in the text) of blood volume in the shock state. The next four chapters review, in order, microcirculatory alterations, pathology, physiology, and the chemistry of shock. The topics of diagnosis and clinical evaluation, and of treatment are then considered. The final chapter, which is entitled "Toward a Concept of the Shock State," attempts briefly to synthesize known pathophysiological mechanisms into an integrated whole.
