Abstract
Although there has been no change in maximum life span, there has been a dramatic rise in mean life expectancy in the UK over the last 100 years. Ageing has little effect on the self-care capacity of the elderly but diseases common in old age and environmental problems cause a great deal of distress and disability. As a result it has been necessary to develop specialized medical and social services for the elderly. These are outlined in this paper.
