Women, low income and smoking: developing community-based initiatives

Abstract
Smoking is a major cause of inequalities in women's health in Scotland. However, few initiatives have been designed to meet the needs of women living on low incomes. This paper describes a three-year project which is attempting to address this issue. The project has provided funding, and evaluation support, to 20 community-based initiatives concerned with women and smoking. This paper highlights the methods used to develop community contacts, the range of initiatives that have been funded and their approach, and some of the key issues that have emerged so far.
