Abstract
The contribution of social anthropology may be to explore the structure of conversational interaction more directly and thoroughly, as part of ethnography, and to insist on understanding discourse structures as situated, that is, as pertaining to cultural and personal occasions which invest discourse with part of their meaning and structure.
