Abstract
An analytical solution to the problem of heat, mass and momentum transfer in the rain zone of a cooling tower, is presented. An approximate solution of the air flow pattern in the inlet section of the cooling tower is determined according to potential flow theory. The air flow pattern is employed to evaluate the convective heat and mass transfer and the pressure loss coefficients in the rain zone, based on the frontal area of the fill. Presented in this manner, the coefficients can be directly employed in a one-dimensional mathematical tower analysis. The coefficients depend on the drop size, tower dimensions and the water to air mass flow ratio. Keywords
