Abstract
O'Sullivan P. M. (1968) Accessibility and the spatial structure of the Irish economy, Reg. Studies 2, 195–206. A graph theory measure of relative accessibility on a transport network is used to investigate the hypothesis that there is some functional relationship between the spatial structure of transport networks and the geographical structure of the economy of the Republic of Ireland. Relationships are sought between various measures of intensity of economic activity and accessibility—chiefly on the arterial road network. Spatial variations in returns to factors of production suggest a system not in equilibrium. Hypotheses are put forward relating changes that could be expected from this disequilibrium to accessibility and tested against actual patterns of change. Correlation and regression analysis is used to test the hypotheses generated in the study. It was hoped to relate the central place structure to transport networks. Urban nodal structure is defined using a graph theory technique but it only proves possible to display this and relate it qualitatively to the network. Keywords
