Abstract
The Becke-line method was applied to determine the refractive indices of some Egyptian cotton varieties for light vibrating parallel and perpendicular to the fiber axis. Straight-line relations were found between the calculated birefringence and the grades of these cottons. Multiple-beam Fizeau fringes in transmission have been applied to determine the mean refractive indices and birefringence of cotton fibers. Keywords
