Abstract
Summary: The error in ultrasonic measurement of fetal biparietal diameter was calculated from paired measurements on 129 fetuses of 12 to 40 weeks' gestation. The error was significantly greater for heads less than 59 mm. and more than 83 mm. It is concluded that the technique is of greatest value between the 23rd and 31st weeks. After the 31st week the error increases rapidly until at term it is equivalent to 12 days' average growth. Improvements are suggested which may increase the clinical value of the estimates at all stages of pregnancy. Keywords
