Healthy IgE-Deficient Person

Abstract
To the Editor: The recent identification of the human immunoglobulin IgE has stimulated speculation about its role in normal physiology, as was pointed out in an editorial (N.E.J.M. 281:502–504, 1969). This problem has been approached indirectly by a search for correlations between pathologic states and the level of immunoglobulin in serum. Elevation of serum IgE concentration has been reported in patients with allergic disorders such as asthma, hay fever and eczema,1 in patients infested with Ascaris lumbricoides 2 and in patients with the Wiskott—Aldrich syndrome.3 However, no new insight has yet been gained regarding the role of IgE in normal physiology . . .
