Abstract
In diabetic children accelerated development of the mixed dentition was evident before the age of 11.5 years; at this age and thereafter, development was retarded. The edentulous interval was longer in diabetic children than in the normal reference population. Age-dependent accelerated and retarded tooth development in diabetic individuals may be explained by systemic effects on the dentition that are supposedly mediated by the pituitary gland. The longer edentulous interval, however, apparently is due to local effects of diabetes. Keywords
