An Inherited and Pregnancy-Associated α2-Globulin in Japanese Sera

Abstract
In trying to obtain rabbit immune sera to allotypic antigen AL-M, rabbit antisera were obtained which detected a pregnancy-associated antigen in human sera. In the Japanese population, the antigen was present in up to 100% of pregnancy sera, in 49% of adult female sera and in 9% of adult male and children sera. The antigen seemed to be controlled by an autosomal recessive gene, though its expression was strongly influenced by female hormones. The antigen was heat-labile macromolecule with electrophoretic mobility of a serum α2-globulin. This antigen was quite similar to Pa 1 α2-globulin reported by MacLaren et al. with respect to its frequency of inheritance and the physicochemical properties.
