Abstract
The stoppered Cartesian diver respirometer previously described (Biol. Bull. 98: 139-143. 1950) was used for measuring changes in the respiratory rate associated with division in single eggs of Psammechinus miliaris and of Ciona intestinalis. The paper discusses certain discrepancies in results to be found in the literature. In 6.5 experiments on developing single eggs, out of a total of 10 experiments, the respiratory rate showed a temporary decrease of 5-10% every time the egg divided. The method is not well enough controlled to permit definite statements as to whether or not deviating experiments should be referred to imperfections in the technique or to the eggs themselves. The method as applied to single eggs is described. This publication has 6 references indexed in Scilit:
