Abstract
A first step in understanding the epidemiology of any chronic disease is the separation of heredity and environment. Many workers feel that rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an inherited disease. This review critically analyses the literature on this subject, and concludes that the available studies give little support to any genetic cause of RA.
