Abstract
By combining the measurements of the amount of streaming birefringence and of extinction angle one obtains the mean coil expansion h/h 0 of the unbranched linear macromolecule in laminar flow. It turns out to be less than expected for a perfectly flexible model in good agreement with other evidence. This determination is independent on the molecular model and merely requires that the average optical anisotropy is proportional to the mean square of the end‐to‐end distance of the macromolecule.
