Abstract
Optical spectrophotometry, infrared photometry and radio continuum observations are combined to investigate the class of bipolar nebulae defined purely morphologically. The evolutionary status of these objects is considered. A few represent pre-main sequence objects; most seem to be proto-planetary nebulae; and a small number are evolved planetary nebulae. Keywords
