Abstract
The United States economy is vitally dependent on agriculture, livestock health and freedom from any major foreign animal disease (FAD). Future FAD pressures on United States livestock industries will increase. Possible response to the intentional introduction of a FAD have been suggested. High category risks such as Newcastle disease, African swine fever and rinderpest are discussed. Tighter quarantine control and surveillance alone cannot neutralize these increasing risks that have been further intensified by the possibility of the agent being introduced by a terrorist. It is therefore recommended that the United States prepare for terrorist introduced FAD's by formulating contingency plans, establishing vaccine banks, implementing education programs, testing of all programs and plans, and coordinating lines of communication between the United States Department of Agriculture and the non-agricultural national security system. Keywords
