Abstract
The internal energy of the surface layer produced by thermochemical processing is determined partly by the residual stresses resulting from surface pretreatment. In this paper are presented the results of an experimental study of how these residual stresses affect the surface layers of ion nitrided and ion titanized tool steels. The distribution of residual stress in the surface layers is discussed. MST/22Keywords
