Host specialisation ofRhynchosporium secalisin New Zealand

Abstract
Cross inoculations demonstrate that 15 New Zealand isolates of Rhynchosporium secalis (Oud.) J. J. Davis from various hosts show at least two degrees of host specialisation. All of four isolates from Hordeum vulgare L., and isolates from Secale cereale L. and Agropyron repens (L.) Beauv., were pathogenic to their original host only. Four isolates from Hordeum murinum L. were pathogenic to both H. murinum and H. vulgare but were most aggressive on H. murinum. Four of six isolates from A. repens were not pathogenic on any hosts. In culture, isolates from H. vulgare, H. murinum, and S. cereale were similar in growth characteristics, with conidia of most isolates characteristically 2-celled and beaked. Isolates from A. repens were slower-growing and sporulated less than those from other hosts, with conidia frequently short and bulbous, especially in culture.
