Abstract
Streptomycin was shown to exhibit inhibitory activity on the oxidation of higher fatty acids (C12 to C18) by M. tuberculosis, avian type, strain Kirchberg. This inhibition was not complete, but appeared to involve the oxidation of the breakdown products of the fatty acid chain. Dihydrostrepto-mycin showed similar inhibitory activity on this reaction, but p-aminosalicylic acid did not. The oxidation of the higher fatty acids by a streptomycin-resistant strain derived from this organism was not comparably influenced by streptomycin. Oxidation of stearate by Escherichia coli was markedly reduced in the presence of streptomycin, and the acquisition of streptomycin resistance by this bacterium was accompanied by loss of the major portion of the oxidative mechanism for the fatty acid. Keywords
