Geographic Variation of Radioiodine Uptake in Euthyroid Subjects

Abstract
Thyroid uptake data for over 18,000 euthyroid subjects were obtained from 103 different observers. From these data, using methods described earlier (J Clin Endocr28: 776, 1968), a characteristic mean daily dietary intake of iodine was calculated for each patient population. Average intake is higher in the continental United States than in most foreign locations studied; the latter included Australia, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Great Britain and some European continental centers. Within the United States there are smaller, but statistically significant, geographic variations of ; intake appears to be lower in the northeastern states than in southern and western states. Minor differences in were found between different racial groups studied in Hawaii.
