Abstract
Thyroid uptake data for over 18,000 euthyroid subjects were obtained from 103 different observers. From these data, using methods described earlier (J Clin Endocr28: 776, 1968), a characteristic mean daily dietary intake of iodine was calculated for each patient population. Average intake is higher in the continental United States than in most foreign locations studied; the latter included Australia, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Great Britain and some European continental centers. Within the United States there are smaller, but statistically significant, geographic variations of ; intake appears to be lower in the northeastern states than in southern and western states. Minor differences in were found between different racial groups studied in Hawaii. Keywords
