Abstract
The pressure dependence of accommodation coefficients of gases on metals has been explained by assuming that the accommodation coefficient varies linearly with the fraction of the surface covered with adsorbed gas. It is further assumed that the accommodation coefficient has a negligibly small value α0 on a gas‐free surface and an asymptotic value α∞ on a saturated surface. The assumptions lead to an accommodation coefficient isotherm which reproduces the pressure dependence of 119 accommodation coefficient values for ten gases on platinum with an average absolute deviation of 1.5 percent. Keywords
