Abstract
A comparison has been carried out between RNA made in the presence and absence of methionine in a T2‐infected RCstringentEscherichia coli requiring methionine. RNA was labelled with H32PO4‐or [3H]uracil for 4 minutes during the early phase of the infection. After sucrose density gradient centrifugation, the radioactive RNA formed had highest specific activity in the polysome region, and this activity was essentially the same for the two experimental conditions. The radioactive RNA from the polysomes was demonstrated to be hybridizable with T2 DNA. The findings indicate the presence of a mechanism which allows polysome formation and RNA synthesis to proceed normally under circumstances where deprivation of a required amino acid greatly reduces protein synthesis. This publication has 19 references indexed in Scilit:
