Abstract
Results are described in order to illustrate the deleterious effects of repeatedly opening the door of a continuous-flow CO2 incubator. During the hour required for equilibration of the concentration of CO2, all bicarbonate-buffered cultures have a dangerously alkaline pH. The addition of equipment designed to deliver automatically 100% CO2 for a brief time provides rapid recovery of the desired concentration of CO2. The door of the incubator may then be more frequently opened, without fear of the contents "drifting" alkaline for a prolonged period. Keywords
