Abstract
This is the second of two articles on groundwater pollution. In the first article “Groundwater Contamination: The New Pollution” (Environment, March 1982), former CEQ staff member David E. Burmaster discussed a recent CEQ survey which combined data from EPA and state governments. The study found that at least 34 states have experienced serious incidents of drinking groundwater contamination and that over 33 toxic organic chemicals have been found in these wells, often in concentrations in excess of those found in surface waters. Many of these compounds have been shown to be or are suspected of being carcinogenic. In this article, Amy Horne outlines existing federal and state regulations for groundwater protection and the current status of the groundwater protection strategy first proposed by the Carter administration.
