Abstract
The author reviews the development of amphibian, avian, and mammalian joints; the innervation of joints under the heads gross and microscopic distrs. of articular nerves, terminations, functions (vasomotor, vasosensory, pain, reflexes, sensation); and the properties and functions of joint tissues. The last section includes discussion of the mechanics of lubrications, the growth, metabolic changes and physical properties of articular cartilage, synovial tissue and fluid, the articular capsule, intra-articular structures, the mucin of synovial fluid and the metabolism of joint tissues, especially in relation to hormone influence. A list of 521 references is included. Keywords
