Abstract
The retention of cigarette smoke in the respiratory tract was determined for three different test conditions. The results showed that 20 to 50% by weight of the smoke particles were retained in the buccal cavity when none of the smoke was inhaled. Retention was about 82% when the smoke was held in the lungs for 5 seconds, and about 97% when the smoke was held for 30 seconds. Based on particle-size measurements of exhaled smoke, the longer the smoke was retained in the respiratory tract, the smaller were the exhaled particles. Keywords
