Aeronautical Decision Making: The next generation

Abstract
Aeronautical Decision Making (ADM) has received increasing attention both as a topic of study and as a topic for training. ADM training has had a positive impact on pilot performance. This chapter describes what Naturalistic Decision Making (NDM) is and some basic NDM concepts and models. It explains the implications that a naturalistic approach has for ADM. The biennial Inter-national Symposium of Aviation Psychology has presented a clear image of the evolution of ADM concepts and training through the 1980s. The Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University judgement training materials serve as the foundation for most ADM training courses. ADM training addresses each of these points by providing a structured approach to decision making, recognizing and minimizing the effects of hazardous attitudes, and recognizing and overcoming the effects of stress. ADM researchers and trainers have achieved two substantial goals: they have dramatically improved pilot performance through training, and they have drawn attention to the importance of cognitive performance to aviation safety.
